Letter to Parents

Dear Parents,

My name is Mr. Edwards and I will be completing my student teaching during your son/daughter’s English IV class this semester.  First, let me say what a pleasure it is to have your child in my class.  As I am new in the system, I would like to tell you a little about me.  I am currently enrolled in my final semester with the Master of Arts in Education program at East Tennessee State University.  I earned my undergraduate degree in English/Creative Writing from the University of Tennessee Knoxville in 2008 (Go Vols!).  My family and I have lived in the area for several generations, and I consider it an honor to serve a community that has given me so much.

The upcoming semester is packed full of exciting and interesting events here in the classroom.  I am particularly looking forward to discussing Mary Shelley’s masterwork Frankenstein with your child.  Over the course of a unit we will delve into the labyrinth of the human psyche, examine one man’s hubris, witness the birth of a gothic horror icon, and find out just who the monster in the story really is.  I invite you to join us in exploring this and other engrossing texts along with your student.  A more complete listing of our texts can be found on the syllabus provided by my mentor teacher, Ms. Edwards.  I also maintain and update an educational blog at www.impendingnewseveryone.blogspot.com which I encourage both you and your child to follow for news from our classroom.

I have great expectations for your child this semester.  I will do everything within my power to provide your student with the tools necessary for success.  How those tools are employed, however, is up to you and your student.  I implore each of you to take an active role in your child’s education.  If we can form a united front for education, I firmly believe that each of us will grow as a result.  Again, it is an honor to have your child in class this semester.  We will have a great, productive time together.  I wish you and your family the best in all things.

Sincerely,

Brian J. Edwards
